Ston absent-mindedly ran the brush along the side of his horse. He named her Coconut in Bay Bridge because the coloring matched the coconuts prevalent in Nep Aua. He had nothing better to do than to groom his horse while he waited. The mare had been a fine horse for the journey. Sergeant Lenn selected the best horses he could find and Jas did not hesitate to provide the needed coin. Lenn seemed to know everything about horses and he had been quick to help Ston, even before he knew he needed it. With Lenn traveling with Jas, Grettor now assumed that responsibility. Ston had never been much of a horseman, he had spent his time learning how to care for the sick and injured. To relax from healing, he trained with his sword. His only riding experience came during the royal hunts with his cousins that only occurred twice each year.

Ston did not like these barbarians. They smelled bad. They were dirty and ugly. A couple of hours must have passed since he, Inman, and Pedor had finished the meeting this afternoon. The seers had them waiting now as they held council. Ston laughed to himself as he realized that keeping someone waiting was a common show of power used back home, as well. Perhaps these barbarians had something in common with the civilized world after all. He paced back and forth among the horses on the edge of the tents. He tried not to stare at the barbarians, but he did not want to turn his back to them. The children stared at the soldiers. At the far side of the horses, Inman sat on a small rock, obviously deep in thought. Inman and the Flame Riders handled the wait and tension much better than he did.

Sergeant Pedor, Grettor, and Bern busied themselves by admiring some barbarian horses being groomed nearby. They appeared to be genuinely impressed by the unusual breed. The horses looked similar in size to Coconut. However, the shape of their head and their tail seemed slightly different. The Flame Riders must have seen other differences. The Flame Riders had the reputation as the best heavy cavalry in the world. Equally, the barbarians showed interest in the Flame Riders’ large warhorses and saddles. The two groups conversing about horses made an interesting sight.

Ston left Coconut in Pedor’s care and walked back to his tent to see what he could find for his evening meal. The Flame Riders did not want to start a cook fire and Inman did not want to reveal his magic skill. So, dried beef and nuts would have to do.

After his brief meal, the seers still had not appeared. Curious about the delay, Ston wandered back to the seer’s tent. A goat, tied to a stake in the ground, eyed him with suspicion. Ston altered his path to provide the goat with plenty of space. When he found the seer tent, the leather door remained closed and a guard had been posted outside.
